The man

His word.
Is his bond.

Born on 12th August 1971 at Methodist General Hospital, Ituk Mbang, in his native Uruan Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Akparawa Michael BUSH hails from Ekpene Ukim, the community that is the gateway to Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo. His is the Obioku Royal Family of Obio Ikot Anua, the leading community in the Ekpene Ukim group of villages, known to have produced business, leadership, and cultural icons. He was raised in Bekumu, a fishing suburb in Bamusso Sub Division, Ndian Division, Southwest Province of the Republic of Cameroon. His father, Etubom (Elder) Michael Effiong Mbaba, a fisherman, died in 2021; his mother, Deaconess (Mrs.) Paulina Michael Effiong, who set out as a petty trader, is now a farmer. A truly traditional cum urbane, upwardly mobile man, he built his life from the ground up. He attended Government School, Bekumu, from 1977 to 1984, and later Government Secondary School (now Government Bilingual High School), Ekondo Titi, from 1984 to 1989, before returning to Nigeria in the early nineties and graduating in 1998/99 with a second class upper degree in French from the University of Uyo, which admitted him in 1992/93.

Michael BUSH's broadcasting career began at Radio Akwa Ibom 90.5 FM, Uyo: first as a freelancer from 1993 for a little over six years, then as a staff member from 1999/2000 for a little over three years. He left in 2002 to found BUSH House Nigeria in 2003, producing programmes on radio, television, and online platforms, and publishing newspaper and magazine titles. Fondly called The Boss, he has now been in media for 33 years and counting, across electronic, print, and new media. Some of his works are evergreen: 20 Questions, BUSH House Hospitals, BUSH House Schools, Cup of Coffee, Talking Nonsense, Akwa Ibom of My Dream, and House of Help, among others. His media messaging is essentially about people: giving them a better life and enhancing their wellbeing. In spite of his crazy schedules, he also creates time for verifiable schooling: a PGD in Journalism from the International Institute of Journalism, Abuja, a PGD in Cultural Administration from the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, Abuja, and an M.A. in Broadcasting from the University of Uyo, where he is now a doctoral candidate and rounding off as a part-time lecturer.

The eight pillars

Eight commitments. One direction.

Our governing plan is built around the eight letters of our State's name.

An Akwa Ibom where every Akwaibomight has ACCESS to government, the right KNOWLEDGE to compete, WEALTH from our God-given resources, ADVANCEMENT through world-class infrastructure, INDUSTRIALISATION of every LGA's natural endowment, a BUSINESS environment that works for everyone, OPPORTUNITIES regardless of gender or location, and MANPOWER trained and ready for every challenge. Akwa Ibom For All … The People First!

A

Access

Every Akwaibomight shall have direct, unhindered access to government, without knowing someone who knows someone. We shall create the Akwa Ibom State Agency for Complaints, Justice, and Reconciliation: a real open door, not a ceremonial one.

K

Knowledge

Knowledge is the key that unlocks every door. We shall standardise a truly free education at primary and secondary levels; make vocational and digital skills a must in the curriculum.

W

Wealth

Our State is wealthy so our people should not be poor. We shall return the wealth of Akwa Ibom to Akwaibomights: through fair resource and project allocation, the 13% host-LGA ring-fence, and our Waste-to-Wealth programme.

A

Advancement

We will build the infrastructure of progress: all-season roads connecting all 31 LGAs, Ibaka Deep Seaport, rail connectivity, 24-hour electricity, and digital hubs. And, Science Park shall come back to the top of the agenda.

I

Industrialisation

Every LGA has a God-given resource: we shall process those resources locally: cement from limestone, ceramics from clay, seafood from our coast. Plus, industrial parks in all three senatorial districts.

B

Business

We shall make Akwa Ibom the best State in Nigeria to start and grow a business. SMEs that have stood ten or more years shall receive targeted expansion support: we shall reduce bureaucracy by opening procurement to indigenous contractors.

O

Opportunities

No Akwaibomight shall be left behind because of gender, location, or who they know. Targeted programmes for youth and women, cooperative societies, and diaspora investment pathways.

M

Manpower

Akwa Ibom shall always consider Akwaibomights first. We shall train, certify, position and retrain our people for every opportunity: in oil and gas, technology, agriculture, and governance.

Our immediate priorities

  1. 01Establish Akwa Ibom State Agency for Complaints, Justice, and Reconciliation to offer our people real access to government for every citizen
  2. 02Standardise a fully free education from primary to secondary across all 31 LGAs, with vocational and digital skills so big in the curriculum
  3. 03Return the wealth of Akwa Ibom to Akwaibomights: the 13% host-LGA ring-fence and the Waste-to-Wealth programme
  4. 04Strengthen and build all-season roads to all 31 LGAs, Ibaka Deep Seaport, and 24-hour electricity via gas deposits
  5. 05Industrialise every LGA using its specific mineral and agricultural resource endowment
  6. 06Make Akwa Ibom the best State in Nigeria to start and grow a business: open procurement, reduced bureaucracy
